The most distinctive feature of the Zona Velha is the Art of Open Doors project (Arte das Portas Abertas), which began in 2010. Local and international artists have painted the doors of buildings along Rua de Santa Maria with original works, transforming the street into an open-air gallery. Walking the length of Rua de Santa Maria and examining each door is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Funchal.

Forte de São Tiago
